SALT AND LIGHT

Mathew 5: 13-14

Two themes have been bugging me for some time. It is amazing the similarity between “whispers” and the detail of words. Here I will focus (hopefully briefly on three)
1) Salt
2) Light

I will start with salt for it will lead to light. The following will stray from the context of the word in the verse listed above, but only to understand the word better. The bible clearly describes salt as Sodium Chloride (NaCl), table salt. Today, we are able to understand this word salt in deeper scientific way. The sodium chloride we eat can only be sodium chloride. The bible asks the question-If salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? (Matthew 5:13). This is really has a straight forward answer. Repentance and forgiveness. In order for salt to lose its taste one of two most likely happened:

1)The compound of salt is no longer salt. An element has broken the chemical bond and has made the salt impure. With context of saltiness being lost this could be one’s sinful act(s). This can only be restored by confession of ones sin and asking forgiveness.

2)The salt hasn’t lost its taste, but rather the person can’t taste the salt. This isn’t difficult to understand when we examine everything God created. Not everything is the same to everyone. Each creature is created differently. Again, if we can’t taste the salt maybe we should examine to the reason we can’t taste the salt.

From here I will start to discuss the broader subject of salt. (Here I might lose some of you, I’m sorry). I will start with chemical definition of a salt is an alkali metal and halogen, which can be simplified as a chemical bond between metal and nonmetal. This attraction is easy to understand in relationship to people and Jesus.

You are the salt of the earth (Matthew 5: 13) I will go back to sodium chloride (NaCl), table salt. Sodium (Na) wants to give away an electron in order to become balanced. Chloride (CL) wants to gain an electron. This attraction is the same for the great commission and for followers of Christ. We all have heard this message several times as believers. A believer should be like the sodium (Na) eager to give the message of Christ to a world seeking salvation. In the same manner the world is like Chloride (Cl) desperate to gain peace from the struggles of life without Christ.

I have much more to say, but it will have to wait for another day. However, before I depart from you I will connect salt to light. In order for salt to become light there is a process salt must undergo. When sodium chloride (NaCl), table salt is added to water, the sodium and chloride separate into electrical ions. Jesus is the water. When each of us are separated from each other, yet with Christ a metal can be added to the water creating an electrical current to flow, capable of creating light for all to see.
